Simple present tense is used to
describe habits or repeated
actions, unchanging situations,
general truths, instructions, and
fixed arrangements.

Remember!
The simple present tense is not
used to express actions
happening now because the
correct tense to use is present
continuous tense.

PATTERNS
Affirmative Form Pattern:
1. Subject (I/you/we/they)+Verb+Object
2. Subject (he/she/it)+Verb-s+Object

Negative Form Pattern:

1. Subject (I/you/we/they)+Do+Not+Verb+Object
2. Subject (he/she/it)+Does+Not+Verb+Object

Interrogative Form Pattern:

1. Do+Subject (I/you/we/they)+Verb+Object?
2. Does+Subject (he/she/it)+Verb+Object?
 VOCABULARY
In simple present tense, especially for third
person singular (she/he/it/name), verb
always ends in –s.
Example:
- He works - He gives
- She needs - She writes
However, there are special rules for some
verbs:
 If the verbs end with ‘o, ss, sh, ch, x, z’, then
suffix ‘-es’ will be used.
 If the verbs end with ‘y’ that preceeded by
vowels, then suffix ‘s’ will be used.
 If the verbs end with ‘y’ that preceeded by
consonants, then the ‘y’ will be changed
into ‘i’ and followed by suffix ‘es’.
 If the verbs end with ‘f’, then suffix ‘s’ will
be used.
