INTRODUCTION
• A goal is a desired result that a person plans and
commits to achieve.
• Goal setting- Goal setting involves the development of
an action plan designed to motivate and guide a person
or group toward a goal.
• What is a goal?
Something you would like to achieve.
• What is the purpose of setting goals?
Goals give you direction and keep you focused on where
you want to end up
TYPES OF GOALS
• Short- Term : Goals that can be accomplished in
the near future (within a few weeks or months)
• Long-Term: Goals that are more far-reaching and
take longer to achieve (a year or more)
• Fixed : Goals with an outcome that is based on a
specific date/time
• Flexible : Goals that have an outcome, but no
time limit
Unrealistic Goals

failure, lowered self-image, and lowered self-
esteem

You will be self-confident and enthusiastic
You will make progress
You are closer to success
Why don’t more people set goals?
• A pessimistic attitude – Always seeing the pitfalls rather than the possibilities
• Fear of failure – What if I don’t make it? People feel subconsciously that if
they don’t set goals and if they don’t make it, then they haven’t failed. But
they are failures to begin with.
• A lack of ambition – This is a result of our value system and lack of desire to
live a fulfilled life. Our limited thinking prevents us from progress.
• A fear of rejection – If I don’t make it, what will other people says?
• Procrastination – “Someday, I will set my goals.” This tie in with a lack of
ambition.
• Low self-esteem – Because a person is not internally driven and has no
inspiration.
• Ignorance of the important of goals – Nobody taught them and they never
learned the importance of goal- setting.
• A lack of knowledge about goal-setting – People don’t know the mechanics
of setting goals. They need a step- by-step guide so that they can follow a
system.
Why Goals Fails
• The goal was not written down.
• Rewards for achieving the goals were not given.
• The goal was unrealistic or not specific enough.
• The goal is not really believable or little commitment
exists.
• Keep changing or switching goals with the weather
• The person who set the goal has not told anyone else for
added accountability, help and support.
• The goal was not incorporated into a realistic plan that
includes measurements, timelines and resources.
Guidelines for Setting goals
• Choose goals that are worthwhile.
• Opt for goals that are achievable.
• Make your goals specific.
• Be committed to your goals.
• Prioritize your goals.
• Set deadlines to accomplish your goals.
• Evaluate your goals.
• Reward yourself for accomplishment.
Conclusion
Goal setting is not just about identifying
what you want to achieve but also how you
will achieve it (process goals) and measure
that achievement . Beginners require very
short term, easily achieved goals to boost
their self- confidence whereas the
experienced individual need more
challenging yet realistic goals.
