Sustainabe Living

Ryan, Brynn, Brenda

One in four people today live in
poverty
One in eight people do not have
enough food to grow properly
Twice as many people are being fed
today than in 1950, on only 80% of the
agricultural lands that were used then.
Sustainable development: development
that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the future
generations to meet their own needs
Population growth must be held at a level
that can be sustained
 The wealthy must stabilize their use of
natural resources
How do we create a sustainable world?

•We must respect

and care for the
community of
life
•Maintain
ecosystems and
the services they
provide
Improve the quality of life
for the poor
• Highly developed countries represent 19% of the
population but control 79% of the wealth
• 1.3 billion people worldwide live without clean water
• 2 billion people do not have access to electricity
• If we do not confront the problem of poverty, then
the world can never be sustainable

Conserve biological diversity
Most biological diversity we depend on occurs in developing countries
We should protect the natural areas, with international assistance if
necessary
Studies have shown that investments in protected areas yield a cost to
benefit ratio of one to 25 and one to 100 in some areas. Stephen Leahy,

In Vietnam, planting and protecting 12,000 hectares of mangroves
cost about a million dollars but saved over seven million dollars for
dyke maintenance. Stephen Leahy,

10-30% of the mammal, bird and amphibian species are currently
threatened with extinction
Keep within Earth’s carrying capacity

The U.N estimates

the human
population to be 9.3
billion by the end of
the 21st century
The Earth will not be
able to maintain such
a growing population
Change Personal Attitudes and
Practices
Education is a key
process, such as
education about the
dwindling resources
or birth control
Concepts
Teach Communities to Create a Global
Care for Their Own Alliance
Environment Environmental
Local governments problems happen
should be responsible throughout the world,
for some sustainable not just in one specific
development area
Global treaties exist, but
they must begin to be
supported by all nations
