Nature of light - Wave

-Electromagnetic radiation.
-Tranverse.
-Travel though a vacuum and other media.
- Reflection, refraction , interference … And also obey the law of
propagation , interference, refraction …

Nature of light -wavefront

A wave front is a surface or line in the path of wave motion on which the
disturbances at every point have the same phase .

Wavefront has three types

Cylindrical
Spherical wavefront wavefront Plane Wavefront

Superposition of light waves
Definition
-The same frequency and amplitude
-a phase difference yields a sinusoidal wave with the same frequency
This phenomenon is generally described as interference.

Huygen’s principle of light’s propagation
Huygen’s principle was born in the 17th
century

Huygen’s principle :
All points on wavefront are point sources
for ‘spherical secondary wavelets’ with
speed, frequency .Equal to initial wave.

Describe the light propagation
through the interface two media

Consider the case of oil floating on water.

So there are 2 types of light appeared

Concept of refractive index:
Definition: is the ratio between the speed of light in a
vacuum and the phase speed of electromagnetic
radiation in the material. It’s usually denoted by “n”.
There are two tive of refractive index:
+ Absolute refractive index
+ Relative refractive index

Law of reflection and refraction

1. Reflection:
-First law of reflection: incident ray and reflected ray all lie in
the same plane.
-Second law of reflection: the angle of reflection is always
equal to the angle of incidence. The constant depends on the
two media and the wavelength of the incident light.
-There are two types of refraction:
+) Frequent reflexes
+) Diffuse reflection

Law of reflection and refraction

2. Refraction:
Refraction from rarer to denser medium: In such cases, the
relative refractive index is greater than 1. The angle of
incidence is greater than the angle of refraction i.e. the
refracted ray shifts towards the normal.
Refraction from denser to rarer medium: The relative
refractive index is less than 1. The angle of refraction is
less than the angle of refraction i.e. the refracted ray shifts
away from the normal.

Light’s wavelength in a material
depending on refractive index

We have the formula showing the relative between n and λ:

n and λ are inverse ratio

Phenomenon of total reflection

Internal reflection takes place at the boundary between

two transparent media when a ray of light in a
medium of higher index of refraction approaches the
other medium at an angle of incidence greater than
the critical angle.
