WHY NOTE-TAKING?

• Notes are a useful record of key information, and the sources of that information.
• Writing notes helps you remember what you heard.
• Taking notes helps you to concentrate and listen effectively.
• Selecting what to note down increases your understanding.

HOW DO WE UNDERSTAND WHAT TO NOTE
DOWN?
A speaker usually tries to present a few major points and several minor points. These are often
supported by examples or other explanatory details. The lecturer is probably making an important point
if he or she does one or more of the following things:

1. mentions an idea in a preview or summary


2. uses word clues such as causes of ’, ‘ main elements’ ‘fist, second, finally etc.
3. pauses before or after an idea
4. uses a louder or slower voice
5. uses repetition to emphasize a point
6. Rephrases a concept
