VILLAGE HEALTH AND NUTRITION DAY
Village Health and Nutrition day(Mamata Diwas) a concept for
interdepartmental convergence having desirable health outcomes of
 Pregnant women,
Lactating mothers,
Children below five years
 Adolescent girls
It is being introduced in the state of Odisha by the department of
Health & Family welfare Deptt. The Govt of India (H&F.W. Deptt)
have launched this program in the year 2005 .

 This would provide the first point of contact for essential primary
health care and would work as the common platform for
convergence amongst service provider of health , ICDS & the
community .
 The program would be organised once in a month every
Anganwadi centre on a fixed day basis (Tuesday or Friday) with
joint efforts of ANM, AWW & ASHA . The Anganwadi centre is
identified as the hub for the service provision (NHM)
OBJECTIVES
 To provide essential and comprehensive health and nutrition services to
pregnant women, lactating mothers, children (0-5 years) and
adolescencent girls.
 To ensure early registration, identification and referral of high risk
children and pregnant women.
 To provide an effective platform for interaction services provider and
the community (through Gaon Kalyan Samit or the mother’s group)
 To provide information to families on care of mothers and children at
the household and the community level through discussion of various
health topics (as envisaged in Health calendar).
 To ensure establishment of linkage between health and ICDS as to
promote maternal and child survival program.

3.FAMILY PLANNING

 Information on use of contraceptives


 Distribution – provision of contraceptive counselling and
provision of non –clinic contraceptives such as condoms and
OCPs
 Information on compensation for loss of wages resulting from
sterilisation.
4.RTI & STI
 Counselling on prevention of RTIs and STIs including HIV/AIDS
and referral of cases for diagnosis and treatment.
 Counselling for premenopausal and post-menopausal problems
 Communication on causation, transmission and prevention of
HIV/AIDS and distribution of condoms for dual protection.
 Referral for VCTC and PPTCT services to the appropriate
institutions.
5.SANITATION

 Identification of households for the construction of sanitary


latrines
 Guidance on where to go and whom to approach for availing of
subsidy for those eligible to get the same under the Total
Sanitation Campaign.
 Avoidance of breeding sites for mosquitoes.
 Mobilization of community action for safe disposal of
household refuse and garbage.
6.COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

 Group communication activities for raising awareness about


signs and symptoms of leprosy & T.B, suspected cases and
referral.
 Group communication activities for elimination of breeding
sites for mosquitoes, management for fever cases, i.e
important collection of blood film for MP and prevention &
treatment.
7.GENDER

 Communication activities for prevention of pre-natal sex


determination, illegality of pre-natal sex selection and
special alert for one daughter families.
 Communication on the Prevention of Violence against
Women, Domestic Violence Act,2006.
 Age at marriage, especially the importance of raising the
age at marriage for girls.
8.AYUSH
 Home remedies for common ailments based on certain
common herbs and medicinal plants like tulsi found in the
locality.
 Information related to other AYUSH components, including
drugs for treatable conditions like anaemia
9.HEALTH PROMOTION

Chronic diseases can be prevented by providing information


and counselling on:
Tobacco chewing
Healthy lifestyle
Proper diet
Proper exercise
10.NUTRITION
Diseases due to nutritional deficiencies can be prevented by giving
information and counselling on:
Healthy food habits.
Hygienic and correct cooking practices
Checking for anaemia, especially in adolescent girls and pregnant
women, checking advising and referring.
Weighing of infants and children
Importance of iron supplements, vitamins and micronutrients.
Food that can be grown locally
Focus on adolescent, pregnant women and infants aged 6month to 1year.

ADMO (FW) will be the Nodal Officer of Mamata
Diwas at district level and MOIC at the block level
CDMO /District level officer
Activities-CDMO orient to the guideline of VHND on the
theme of the month
Skill identify and monitor –Identify skill needed for
VHND
Supervising –supervise minimum 4-6 VHNDs every
month in district
Reporting –co-ordinate the activities at district level and
submit the report to the state with help of DPMU

 Toensure smooth implementation of programme
provision of Rs 100/- for the ANM & 50/- for the
AWW has been made as TA per session where as for
ASHA RS 50/- is to be provided as incentive(Block MO
will make necessary arrangement for regular payment)

 There is a provision of first referral transport cost of Rs


150/- , if the distance between the VHND site & the first
referral point is less than 10k.m, if more than
10 km to be paid Rs 200/-
conclusion
It is a joint initiative of health and family
welfare Deptt. to strengthen health of mother,
child and adolescent girls and to identify risk of
mother and children and provided
comprehensive health services at the door step
level for community.
