Articulaters

:Definition *
It’s a mechanical device
representing as TMJ &jaw
members to which maxillary and
mandibular cast may be attached
.to stimulate jaw movement
Uses Of Articulator
Mounting the dental cast for diagnosis, \1
.treatment planning & patient presentation
.arrangement of artificial teeth for CD & RPD \2
.correcting &modified complete restoration \3
wax up & refining the occlusion for dental \4
.restoration
it can be helpful in teaching & studying of \5
.occlusion & mandibular movement
Advantages Of
Articulators
It serves as an extremely useful instrument in the absence \1
.of patient
.considerably more chair time & patient appointment time \2
intraoral analysis of occlusion has many limitation that \3
magnified when are study occlusion in CD, visibility is best
.out side of mouth
it provide a stable working foundation for refinement of \4
.CD occlusion outside the mouth
Basic requirements
of articulaters
.maintain the casts in correct horizontal and vertical relationships \1
.provide a positive anterior vertical stop (incisal pin) \2
.open and close in hinge-like movement \3
.allow protrusive & lateral jaw motion \4
construction of the articulater should be accurate, rigid & corrosive \5
.material
.the moving parts should resist wear \6
.the articulators should be able to re cine aface-bow transfer record \7
Classification of
articulators
Articulators are most commonly classified according
to closely they mimic centric & eccentric mandibular
:movement
.simple hinge or plane- line articulator \1
.fixed condylar path (mean-value) articulator \2
:adjustable articulators which may be either \3
.semi-adjustable )A(
.full adjustable )B(
Simple hinge
articulators
They are the least adjustable, because they have very limited - 
.capabilities for stimulating eccentric mandibular position
consist of two arms or bows united by hinge & stop or screw a -
.hold the bows a fixed distant part
record only thee occlusal position allowing only opening & -
.closing movement
.teeth set-up for CD in contact position other than centric position -
. simple as they are hidden source of error -
relation of the mounting casts to the hinge axis of the articulater -
.is usually incorrect
Simple hinge
articulators
.the hinge axis of the articulator is inferior & anterior to that of the patients -
the casts open & close or lesser radius than the teeth in the mouth & angle -
.of approach is different
.errors or horizontal & vertical relations are produced -
the greater the thickness of the interocclusal registration, the degree of -
.error
simple articulaters when correctly used , are suitable for small intracoronal -
restoration that do not involve cusps & are limited to the occlusal fossa
.region of the teeth
they are satisfactory when use the functionally generated path technique for -
.more complex restoration
Fixed condoylar path
.articulator )mean value(
These movable non-adjustable articulator provide for-
.average mandibular excursions
they permit not only opening &closing hinge movement -
.but also protrusive, right & left lateral excursion
the condylar ball, if one is present normally attached to -
the upper member of articulater & rotate in a groove or
.slot in the lower member
allow lateral & protrusive movement a fixed condylar -
.inclination & fixed or adjustable incisal guidance table
The incisal guide pin helps to hold the articulator open at a -
.definite position
The relationship of the maxilla to the condyles is -
established by aligning the maxillary occlusal rim with the
incisal pin and with notches or a bar at the (condylar
.posts)of the articulators
May be used where the number and position of remaining -
teeth are such that a clear guide to the position and form
.of missing teeth exists
The limitation of the mean-value articulators is when the -
patient condylar angle differ sufficiently from the average
value to causes particle difference between the articulator
.movement and those of the jaw
Based on adjustable of
the articulator can be
:classified as

.non-adjustable \1
.semi-adjustable \2
.fully-adjustable \3
Non-adjustable
articulators
They can open and close in a fixed horizontal -
.axis
They have a fixed condylar path along which the -
condylar ball can be moved to stimulate lateral
.& protrusive jaw movement

The incisal guide pins rids on an inclined plate -

.in fixed inclination
The semi-adjustable articulators
It have adjustable horizontal condylar path and -
.adjustable incisal guide table
:They have two types
.A- arcon articulators
.B-non-arcon articulator
:Arcon articulators
the term “arcon” was derived by bergstrom from - 
.the words articulator & condyle
. e.g.: Hanau university series & whip-mix articulator
The condylar elements is attached to the lower - 
member of articulator & the condylar guidance is
.attached to the upper members
this articulator is resemble to theTMG (the condylar - 

guidance is the mechanical along the glenoid fossa .

.It preserved the relationship of the opposing casts
: :Non-arcon articulator
these articulator have the condyle element - 
.attached to the upper member
the condylar guidance is attached to the lower - 

.member
some example include Hanau H series,- 
. dentatus
.this articulator reverse of TMG - 
Fully adjustable
: articulator

they are follow the mandibular movement in all - 

.direction
the condylar housings can be adjusted in the - 
.horizontal sagittal & frontal plane
these articulator have numerous adjustable - 
. reading which can be customized for each patient
they do not have a condylar guidance & they are - 

.not commonly use due to their complxity
