We have three types of questions:

Yes or no questions – Do you want some


coffee?

Wh questions – Where do you live?

Choice questions – Do you prefer

We can use ‘’if’’ or ‘whether’’ in reported questions (‘’whether’’ is more formal than
‘’if’’)

We normally introduce yes or no questions with Ask + if / whether

Do you live here? - She asked me if / whether I lived here.

We introduce wh questions with: Ask + the question word and a subject

Who are you? She asked me who I was.

Where do you live? He asked me where I lived.

In choice questions you can use: If or whether without any problem.

Do you prefer salad of fruits – She asked me whether / if I prefer salad or fruits.
Up to date and out of
date reporting
In the reported speech we have two options: Up to date reporting & Out of date reporting.

Up to date reporting: It is when you repeat what a person said right after it was said, here you
can repeat it using the same tense

Ex: I am living – He said (that) he is living

Julia will work in the afternoon – He said (that) Julia will work in the afternoon.

Out of date reporting: It is when we repeat what someone said a long time after it was said,
here the tense varies.

I need to work more – He said that he needed to work more

I will call you in the morning – He said that he would call me in the morning

I am not at home – He said that he wasn’t at home


I want a car ( out of date)

I believe there is a snake under the fridge (up to date)

I need to stay here and rest (up to date)

Do you live here? (out of date)

I don’t want to cook ( up to date)

I wish I could be rich (up to date)

Feel up to something: To be in a good mood to do something.

Thomas was sick and got over, now he feels up to finishing his science project.

Fall over: To trip over, to fall.

I was walking in the park and fell over a stone that was on the ground.

Fit into: To belong to a particular group or place.

Thomas you don’t fit into this place, you are a good student but nodoby studies here so I recommend
you to look for other friends.

Feel for: To sympathize with somebody.
