BIOTECHNOLOGY
Applications in Crop Improvement:
Genetic engineering has several potential applications in crop improvement, such as
given below:

1. Distant Hybridization
2. Development of Transgenic Plants
3. Development of Root Nodules in Cereal Crops
4. Development of C4 Plants
TRANSGENIC
PLANTS
TRANSGENIC PLANTS
• Transgenic plants are plants that have been genetically
engineered, a breeding approach that uses recombinant
DNA technique to create plants with new
characteristics. They are identified as a class of
genetically modified organism (GM0).
• The plant containing desired gene (s) from other plants
are called transgenic plants.
ADVANTAGES OF
TRANSGENIC
PLANTS:
• Improve the crop with desired traits.
• Improve yield & quality.
• Resistance to any abiotic stresses.
• Manufacture of commercial products.
• The aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which
does not occur naturally in the species.
• Several GM crops for malnutrition are expected to be
revealed for cultivation in the coming five to ten years.
GOLDEN RICE
DISADVANTAGES OF GOLDEN
RICE
HEALTH:
• May cause allergies or fail to perform desired effect.
• Supply does not provide a substantial quantity as the
recommended daily intake.
ENVIRONMENT:
• Loss of biodiversity may become a gregarious weed and endanger
the existence of natural rice plants.
• Genetic contamination of natural, global staple food.
CULTURE:
• Some people prefer to cultivate and eat only white rice based on
traditional values and spiritual.
