Changes: Day 1
Welcome to chemistry!
Vocabulary
Chemical Reaction: Process in which one or more substances are converted to one or more different
substance.

Substance: Material something is made of.

Change: To make something different or modify.

Matter: Anything that has mass and volume (occupies space)

What do you think: Are all changes the same?

Not all changes are the same!

How do we as scientists
prove our findings?

A key aspect of the scientific method is proving your hypothesis. A

good scientist is able to pose a question, find the answer, and then
provide evidence that supports their findings. Research is a big part of
the experimentation process.

How do we find evidence in a written passage?

We annotate!
What is it?
Annotation is a way of highlighting
key details in a passage. This allows
you to provide evidence to support
and overarching idea.

How to do it?
1. Read the title
2. Underline or highlight what sticks
out to/confuses you
3. Use the margins!
4. Look for the main idea
5. Re-read!
Lets annotate this together!

Ice Cream
Ice cream is a frozen dessert made from
cream and ice, with added flavors and
sweeteners. This mixture is quickly frozen while
it is stirred continuously in a mixer, so large ice
crystals do not form. Some ice cream is made
with carrageenan, a gum found in seaweed.
Carrageenan makes the ice cream not sticky
and easily eatable. Ice cream also comes in a
variety of flavors including chocolate, vanilla,
and strawberry.
Alex went to the grocery store on Monday and bought a
crunchy red apple to eat on the way home. Instead of eating the
apple on the way home, Alex got distracted and left the apple in
his bag. One week later, Alex noticed that his bag started to smell
really bad. Instead of the clean smell of lavender it now smelled
of rotting food. He opened his bag and saw that the apple from
last week was now brown in color and was squishy in texture.
What happened to his apple?

Ricky entered science class with a frown on his face. He checked his watch and
saw it was 1:13 pm, meaning there as 30 minutes of class to go. Ricky today is in a bad
mood because he spilt orange juice on his shirt, tripped on his untied shoelaces, and
broke his lucky pencil. Ricky is hoping for the day to be over as he just wants to go home
and relax. Unfortunately, Ricky’s social studies teacher gave him an essay to complete
and it is due tomorrow. Ricky will have to immediately do his essay once he gets home
instead of playing with his friends. What a horrible day!
