Biases, Stereotypes and their Effects on our Relations with

Others

RCTQ

BIASES
Bias is a disproportionate weight in favor of or against
an idea or thing, usually in a way that is closed-
minded, prejudicial, or unfair. Biases can be innate or
learned. People may develop biases for or against an
individual, a group, or a belief. In science and
engineering, a bias is a systematic error.

HOW DOES BIAS AFFECTS THE LIVES OF OTHER PEOPLE

RCTQ

Biased tendencies can also affect our

professional lives. They can influence
actions and decisions such as whom we
hire or promote, how we interact with
persons of a particular group, what
advice we consider, and how we conduct
performance evaluations.

RCTQ

A stereotype is a widely held,

simplified, and essentialist belief
about a specific group. Groups are
often stereotyped on the basis of sex,
gender identity, race and ethnicity,
nationality, age, socioeconomic status,
language, and so forth. Stereotypes are
deeply embedded within social
institutions and wider culture.
RCTQ

Because stereotypes simplify and justify

social reality, they have potentially powerful
effects on how people perceive and treat
one another. As a result, stereotypes can
lead to discrimination in labor markets
and other domains.
