Definition of PDCA cycle.
The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) Cycle is a four-step problem-solving iterative technique used to improve
business processes. Originally developed by American physicist Walter A. Shewhart during the 1920s, the cycle
draws its inspiration from the continuous evaluation of management practices and management’s willingness to
adopt and disregard unsupported ideas.
The method was popularized by quality control pioneer Dr. W. Edwards Deming in the 1950s who coined the
term “Shewhart” Cycle after his mentor. It was Deming who realized the PDCA Cycle could be used to improve
production processes in the United States during World War II.
What is PDCA?
Plan An Action
A change aimed at improvement.

Background of PDCA
1 Plan

• Identify Exactly what your problem

• Map the process.
• Establish the objectives. Act

Take action based on what you learned in the study

DO

• Generate Possible solutions 3 again with a different plan.
• Execute the process • Study the actual results(measured and
2. If you were successful than standardize.

Juran’s Trilogy
Definition of Juran’s Trilogy
The Juran Trilogy, also called Quality Trilogy, was presented by Dr. Joseph M. Juran in 1986 as a means to manage for
quality. The traditional approach to quality at that time was based on quality control, but today, the Trilogy has become
the basis for most quality management best practices around the world.
In essence, the Juran Trilogy is a universal way of thinking about quality—it fits all functions, all levels, and all product
and service lines. The underlying concept is that managing for quality consists of three universal processes:
1. Prove the Need to Establish the infrastructure 4. Provide the teams with resources,
training and motivation.
