INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOBILE
INDUSTRY
• German engineer Karl Benz, the inventor of numerous car-related
technologies, is generally regarded as the inventor of the modern
automobile when he received a German patent in 1886, American
George B. Selden filed for a patent on May 8, 1879.

• The four-stroke diesel engine was also invented by a German,


Rudolf Diesel.

• The hydrogen fuel cell, one of the technologies hailed as a


replacement for gasoline as an energy source for cars, was
discovered in principle by yet another German,
Christian Friedrich Schönbein, in 1838.

• The battery electric car owes its beginnings to Hungarian


Ányos Jedlik, one of the inventors of the electric motor, and
Gaston Planté, who invented the lead-acid battery in 1859.

• The first car ran on India's roads in 1897. Untill the 1930s, cars
were imported directly. Embryonic automotive industry emerged
in India in the 1940s. Following the independence, in 1947, the
Government of India and the private sector launched efforts to
create an automotive component manufacturing industry to
supply to the automobile industry.

• However, the growth was relatively slow in the 1950s and


1960s due to nationalisation and the license raj which hampered
the Indian private sector. After 1970, the automotive industry
started to grow, but the growth was mainly driven by tractors,
commercial vehicles and scooters. Japanese manufacturers
entered the Indian market ultimately leading to the establishment
of Maruti Udyog. A number of foreign firms initiated joint
ventures with Indian companies

• In the 1980s, a number of Japanese manufacturers


launched joint-ventures for building motorcycles and light
commercial-vehicles. It was at this time that the Indian
government chose Suzuki for its joint-venture to
manufacture small cars.

• Following the economic liberalisation in 1991 and the


gradual weakening of the license raj, a number of Indian
and multi-national car companies launched operations.
Since then, automotive component and automobile
manufacturing growth has accelerated to meet domestic
and export demands.

• Following economic liberalization in India in 1991, the
Indian automotive industry has demonstrated sustained
growth as a result of increased competitiveness and
relaxed restrictions. Several Indian automobile
manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and
Mahindra and Mahindra, expanded their domestic and
international operations.

• India's robust economic growth led to the further


expansion of its domestic automobile market WHICH

TELCO(TATA ENGINEERING AND LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY)
NOW KOWN AS TATA MOTORS.
• IT IS A PART OF TATA GROUP AND WAS ESTABLISHED IN THE
YEAR 1945.
• THE COMPANY MANUFACTURED THE LOCOMOTIVES IN THE
YEAR 1954 WITH DAIMLER BENZ AG.
• THUS THIS WAS THE STATRING POINT OF TATA MOTORS
AND FROM HERE IT WENT ON CREATING MILESTONES IN
AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY IN INDIA AND ACROSS THE GLOBAL
AND HAS BECOME WORLD FAMOUS

• . Despite the success of its commercial vehicles,


Tata realized his company had to diversify and
he began to look at other products.
• Based on consumer demand, he decided that
building a small car would be the most practical
new venture.
• So in 1998 it launched Tata Indica, India's first
fully indigenous passenger car. Designed to be
inexpensive and simple to build and maintain,
the Indica became a hit in the Indian market. It
was also exported to Europe, especially the UK
and Italy.
ACQUISTIONS AND EXPANSION OF
TATA MOTORS

• In 2004 Tata Motors acquired Daewoo's truck manufacturing


unit, now known as Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicle, in South
Korea.
• In 2005, Tata Motors acquired 21% of Aragonese
Hispano Carrocera giving it controlling rights of the company.
• In 2007, Formed a joint venture with Marcopolo of Brazil and
introduced low-floor buses in the Indian Market.[6]
• In 2008, Tata Motors acquired British Jaguar Land Rover (JLR),
which includes the Daimler and Lanchester brand names.
• In 2010, Tata Motors acquired 80% stake in Italy-based design
and engineering company Trilix for a consideration of €1.85
million. The acquisition is in line with the company’s objective to
enhance its styling/design capabilities to global standards.

TATA MOTORS

After years of dominating the commercial vehicle market in India,


Tata Motors entered the passenger vehicle market in 1991 by
launching the Tata Sierra, a multi utility vehicle. After the launch
of three more vehicles, Tata Estate (1992, a stationwagon
design based on the earlier 'TataMobile' (1989), a light
commercial vehicle), Tata Sumo (LCV, 1994) and Tata Safari
(1998, India's first sports utility vehicle). Tata launched the Indica
in 1998, the first fully indigenous passenger car of India. Though
the car was initially panned by auto-analysts, the car's excellent
fuel economy, powerful engine and aggressive marketing
strategy made it one of the best selling cars in the history of the
Indian automobile industry. A newer version of the car, named
Indica V2, was a major improvement over the previous version
and quickly became a mass-favourite. Tata Motors also
successfully exported large quantities of the car to South
Africa.The success of Indica in many ways marked the rise of
Tata Motors.

started manufacturing passenger vehicles.
• The first vehicle manufactured was Tata Indica then
they manufacutred vehicles like Tata Sumo,Tata

Tata Indigo Manza, Tata Indica Vista.
• They even proved the world their commitment of
inventing and manufacturing a car which is in reach
of common man i.e. Tata Nano, so that alow income
group families can also have their private vehicle

• Basically Tata is known for its commercial vehicles. Tata
launched in India first ever Mini Truck known as Tata
Ace which has succeeded in India a lot.
• There are many other commercial vehicles like Tata
Trucks which have many variants running all over the
world helping to transportation a lot.
• Recently Tata Motors have launched its Buses known as
Star Bus which are running in city Mumbai under the
control of BEST.Tata has also launched many military
vehicles like Tata LSV (Light Specialist Vehicle)
• Tata Mine Protected Vehicle (4x4)Tata 2 Stretcher
Ambulance.Tata 407 Troop Carrier, available in hard top,
soft top, 4x4, and 4x2 versions.Tata LPTA 713 TC

• Tata Motors is India’s largest automobile company, with
consolidated revenues of USD 20 billion in 2009-10. It is
the leader in commercial vehicles and among the top
three in passenger vehicles.
• Tata Motors.The company is the world's fourth largest
truck manufacturer, the world's second largest bus
manufacturer, and employs 24,000 workers. Since first
rolled out in 1954, Tata Motors has produced and sold
over 4 million vehicles in India.
• Tata Motors in 2005, was ranked among the top 10
corporations in India with an annual revenue exceeding
INR 320 billion.

• After its establishment in 1945 Tata Motors has shown tremendous growth
and has expanded a lot.
• It has shown a growth rate of more than 60.7% which is outstanding.
• The company’s sales of commercial vehicles in November 2010 in the
domestic market were 35,079 a 19% growth compared to 29,408 vehicles
sold in November last year. LCV sales were 20,376 nos., a growth of 21%
over November last year. M&HCV sales stood at 14,703 nos., a growth of
18% over November last year.
• The passenger vehicles business reported a total sale and distribution
offtake of 16,365 nos. (15,340 Tata + 1,025 Fiat) in the domestic market in
November 2010, lower by 28% compared to 22,671 nos. (20,706 Tata +
1,965 Fiat) in November last year. Sales of Tata passenger vehicles are
15,340 nos., lower by 26% over November 2009.
• So there has been a downward trend in passenger vehicles on the basis of
last year and current year analysis. This is because a cut –throat
competition by various other passenger vehicles company. So Tata Motors
have to diligently work to increase their sales and revenue from passenger
vehicels
.

both BOMBAY STOCK EXCHANGE and NEW YORK
STOCK EXCHANGE.
• It is the Largest It is India's largest company in the automobile
and commercial vehicle sector with upwards of 70% cumulative
Market share in the Domestic Commercial vehicle.
• The Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs
d'Automobiles, commonly abbreviated OICA (International
Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers), is a federation
of automobile manufacturers, based in Paris, founded in 1919)
ranked it as the 19th largest automaker based on figures for
2007, and the second largest manufacturer of commercial
vehicles in the world. The company is the world’s fourth largest
truck manufacturer, and the world’s second largest bus
manufacturer.

ABOUT TATA MOTORS
• Tata Motors has major stake in many of the international
companies some of them are: British brands like Jaguar
Land Rover.
• It also acquired second largest company bus
manufacutrer in South Korea i.e., Daweoo and now its
known as Tata Daweoo. It also accquired Brazil’s
wellknown brand known as Marcopolo.
• Tata Motors acquired a 21% stake in Hispano Carrocera,
a reputed Spanish bus and coach manufacturer,giving it
controlling rights of the company.The also company
picked up the remaining 79% stake in Hispano Carrocera
SA for an undisclosed sum, making it a fully-owned
subsidiary.

• Tata Motors’ passenger vehicles Tata
Indica and Tata Nano have taken the
place in top 10 cheapest cars of the world.
• These were some of the interesting facts
of Tata Motors, the establishment of this
phenomenal subsidiary of Tata Group has
helped India in increasing employment
and also the GDP which has led to
economic growth and development.
CONCLUSION
• This was an attempt made by us to let you all
know how automobiles got invented and their
advent in India, which has created a boom in
transport system of our country.
• We tried to cover some of the things related to
Tata Motors which is globally renowned and
largest car manufacturers in India and world.
• This was only about Tata Motors, but there are
many others who have brought many revolutions
in Indian markets and taken this Industry to a
different level with tremendous improvements in
R&D and many other sectors of our economy.
CONCLUSION
• We have experienced many revolutionary
changes in this industry, which has benefited
India materially.
• Due to increasing demand for locomotives there
has been wastage and over-exploitation of
crude oil and fossil fuels.
• The quality of environment is degrading day-by-
day due to emissions of various hazardous
substances leading to poor quality of air.
CONCLUSION
• These has become the primary concern today to
control the over exploitation of fossil fuels and
other valuable resources.
• So through this we request you to reduce the
wastage of resources by using public transport,
cycles or walking for short distance and make
minimal use of private vehicles.
• So it is left on us to make use of the technology
diligently and take care of our environment.
