WHAT MAKES THE STATUE OF LIBERTY GREEN/BLUE?

• When created (1886), it was a bright shinny brown, like a penny

• By 1906 is was starting to fade to the green and blue color we know today
• The copper from the statue reacts to the air to make verdigris, which adds protection from corrosion
• The combination from copper to oxygen create a chemical called copper oxide
• With age, it starts to create a thin green/blue layer, called patina
• Brochantite- Cu4SO4(OH)6 (green)
• Malachite Mineral-Cu2CO3(OH)2 (green)
• Azurite Mineral-Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 (blue)
PRESERVING METALS ON EIFEL TOWER

• Repainted every seven years to help protect the paint

• Over 2.5 million rivets, built to last forever

• After the 17 time painted, new regulations were put into place
• Area had to be completely cleaned before

• All the corroded areas are sanded, and grounded, then receive two coats of an oleoglycerophthalic primer containing
lead silicate-chromate pigment
• Helps prevent corrosion and allows paint to help stick to it

• The final coat of paint is highly aesthetic appearance; perfect compatibility with the existing, older paints; excellent
corrosion resistance
