History of the Ducal Palace's
construction

Construction
D. Afonso built the Ducal Palace during his second marriage to D. Constança de
Noronha in the 15th century. It was inhabited throughout the 15th century,
after seeing a gradual abandonment and subsequent deterioration caused by
a variety of reasons, which deteriorated until the 20th century.

The changes
It was converted into a military headquarters in 1807 and stayed in use until
1935.A reconstruction was carried out between 1937 and 1959, based on a
scheme proposed by architect Rogério de Azevedo.It is currently administered
by the Northern Regional Directorate of Culture.
