Direct and Indirect object pronouns

Direct object pronouns

The direct object pronoun replaces a noun that is the object of the verb (it has the action done to it) The French direct object pronouns are the following:

me* = me te* you le* = him/it (masc) la* = her/it (fem) nous = us vous = you (polite/plural) les = them
They always go in front of the verb. When you use a negative, the ne goes in front of the pronoun. * m,t and l before words that start with a vowel or silent h

Examples and exercises

e.g. Tes cls? Tu les as la main! = Your keys? You have them in your hand! e.g. Je les prends = I take them e.g. Il me regarde = Hes watching me 1. The bus? I take it every morning. 2. Where is Marie? Can you see her? 3. Le patron du caf ____ connat bien, mes copains et moi. 4. Je _____ assure , madame, que je nai pas pris votre place. 5. Do you like carrots? I love them! 6. Do you know Thomas? Direct object pronouns in the perfect tense

In the perfect tense, object pronouns come before the part of avoir or tre and the past participle agrees with the object pronoun: Une valise? O lavez vous perdue? A suitcase? Where did you lose it? Tes amis? Je ne les ai pas vus. Your friends? I havent seen them.

Indirect object pronouns

An indirect object pronoun replaces a noun, (usually a person) that is linked to the verb by a preposition, usually : e.g. Tu parles Leo? Je parle Leo souvent = Je lui parle souvent. Do you speak to Leo? I speak to Leo often = I speak to him often.

French Indirect object pronouns are:

me/m = to me te/t = to you lui = to him/it (masc) lui = to her/it (fem) nous = to us vous = to you leur = to them

Examples
Dire Quand je vois Luc, je lui dis bonjour = When I see Luc, I say hello to him Donner Je te donnerai mon album = Ill give my album to you Parler Ta prof de franais est cool. Je lui parle souvent. = Your French teacher is cool. I often talk to her.

N.B.
Note that for the first and second persons, (me, you, us, you pl.), the direct and indirect object pronouns are identical (me, te, nous, vous). For the third person (him, her, it, them), the object pronouns are different: le, la, les for direct and lui and leur for indirect. If 2 object pronouns occur together, this is the sequence; me, te, nous, vous go before le, la, les which go before lui and leur. e.g. Vous me lavez dit = You told it to me. e.g. Je les lui ai offerts = I gave them to her.
