CYTOKINESIS

BY , LEKSHMI.S.AJI
INTRODUCTION

 The discovery of cytokinin is linked to

Skoog and his co-workers, who notice that
cells extracted from the internodal segment of
a tobacco stem proliferated to callus.

 Later it was Skoog and miller who isolated and

crystalised the substance that promoted
cytokinesis in a plant cell. It was then named
kinetin.
Kinetin
Cytokinin
• Growth promoter
cytokinin plays an
important role in
cytokinesis .
• They were first
discovered in the
form of kinetin (a
purine derivative).
ZEATIN
One type of cytokinin zeatin was
later isolated from corn-kernels
and coconut milk and much later
naturally occurring cytokinin were
identified in specific regions of
plants such us root apices, shoot
apex and young fruits to promote
growth.
Cytokinin promote growth of
lateral and adventitious shoot by
preventing apical dominance.

They also delay senescence or

the ageing of leaves.
Summary Of Functions of Cytokinin
1. Role in cytokinesis.

2. Help to produce new leaves , chloroplasts in leaves ,

lateral shoot growth and adventitious shoot formation.

3. Help to overcome the apical dominance.

4. Promote nutrient mobilization which helps in the

delay of leaf senescence.
