INTRODUCTION TO

TOEFL
TOEFL Paper Based Test

There are some sections in PBT including Section 1 (Listening
Comprehension), Section 2 (Structure and Written Expression) and Section 3
(Reading Comprehension).
Estimated time for Section 1 is 35 minutes, Section 2 is 25 minutes and
Section 3 is 55 minutes.
TOEFL uses American English.
SECTION 1
• There are three parts of Listening section namely Part A, Part B, Part C in 50 questions.
• Part A includes short conversation between two speakers. One speaker speaks once.
There are 30 conversation for 30 questions including agreement, idiomatic expression,
negative expression, surprise, wishes, etc.
• Part B includes longer conversation between two speakers. The speakers take turn to
have conversation. The questions will be four to five for one conversation about
politics, history, education, etc.
• Part C includes long speech/talk. Each speech is for four to five questions. Be careful on
the first sentence spoken by the speaker.
SECTION 2
Section 2 is divided into Structure and Written Expression. There are 15
Structure questions. Structure question is focused to choose one of four
options containing correct answer. The rest of Section 2 (25 questions) is for
Written which focuses to choose one of four options containing wrong
answer. In section 2, you have to focus on the use of grammar especially
agreement of Subject and Verb, part of speech, conjunction, passive voice
and connectors.
SECTION 3
• Section 3 contains 50 questions. You must focus on the questions of main
idea, supporting idea, reference, inference, meaning, course & tone.
• Reading section is about your vocabulary mastery, and the capability on
concluding the text.
• You don’t need to read all words or sentences in the text. Read only what you
need to answer based on the questions.
• You must understand the content of the text at least the first sentence of each
paragraph in the text.
The highest score of TOEFL PBT is 677 and the lowest score is 300. It is
noted to complete all the questions.
