STRATEGIES FOR SHARING

LITERATURE WITH CHILDREN

STORY
TELLING
As long as there have been people, there
have been stories. From the stories told in
paintings on the ancient caves to the
bedtime stories told to young children,
stories make up our history and guide our
future.
Storytelling is used in design as a technique to get
insight into users, build empathy and access them
emotionally.
ARISTOTLE’S 7 ELEMENTS OF GOOD
STORYTELLING
1. Plot

• What are users trying to achieve/overcome?

2. Character

• who are the users: not just demographically, but what insights do you require to
understand what they’re truly like and their real needs?

3. Theme

• how can you establish a trustworthy presence to them and still set yourself apart
from competitors? How do you reflect the overall obstacles users must overcome?

4. Diction

• what will your design say to users and how? Does a formal/informal tone match what
they’d expect to find? How much text is appropriate?
5. Melody

• will the overall design pattern appear pleasant and predictable to users,
moving them emotionally?

6. Décor

• how will you present everything so the graphics match the setting the

users can sense? Is a classic design or a stylized, niche layout in step with
their expectations?

7. Spectacle

• how can you make your design outstanding so users will remember it?
PUPPETRY

is a form of theatre or performance that

involves the manipulation of puppets –
inanimate objects, often resembling some
type of human or animal figure, that are
animated or manipulated by a human called
a puppeteer
FINGER PUPPETS
• are tiny puppets that fit onto a single finger

SOCK PUPPETS
• are formed from a sock and operated by inserting one's hand inside
the sock, with the opening and closing of the hand simulating the
movement of the puppet's "mouth".

HAND/GLOVE PUPPET
• is controlled by one hand which occupies the interior of the puppet
and moves the puppet around.
MARIONETTES
• are suspended and controlled by a number of strings, plus
sometimes a central rod attached to a control bar held from
above by the puppeteer

ROD PUPPETS
• are made from a head attached to a central rod. Over the rod is a
body form with arms attached controlled by separate rods. They
have more movement possibilities as a consequence than a
simple hand or glove puppet.

SHADOW PUPPET
• uses flat articulated cut-out figures (shadow puppets) which are
held between a source of light and a translucent screen
