CEREBELLUM

PART OF CNS CONCERNED

WITH
• coordination of muscle action.
•Important in learning motor tasks.
•Synchronizes contraction of muscle
within and among groups.
•SMOOTHING OUT RESPONSES
BY REGULATING GRADING
MUSCLE TENSION

•Role in equilibrium and muscle

action.
•No role in intellegence
CEREBELLUM
• Located in
• Posterior cranial fossa, beneath
tentorium cerebelli(dural
refelexion)
• Behind the pons and
medulla(level)

• Anatomical Morphology:

•Outer grey matter ,(cortex)

•Medullary core, white
matter(nerve fibers)
• Cerebellum is connected
to brain stem by three
bundles of white matter
• Superior cerebellar pudencle:
fibers projecting from
cerebellum to Midbrain
• Middle cerebellar pudencle:
between the pons and
cerebellum
• Inferior cerebellar pudencle:
with medulla oblangata
SUBDIVISION OF CEREBELLUM
• Two hemisphere connected by narrow median
portion called vermis.

• Each zone consists of underlying white

matter(fibers) and deep cerebellar nuclei(grey
matter).
1.vermis contains (Fastigial nucleus)
2.paravermal (interposed,globose+emboliform
nuclei)
3.Lateral=hemispheric (dentate nucleus)

Lateral vest.
fibers
nucleus
• Anterior lobe
– Lies rostral to primary
fissure( posture and
proprioception )
• Posterior lobe
– Lies between the primary
and posterolateral fissure

• Role in planning and

programming of
movements( muscular
coordination during phasic
activities)
The cerebellum has
two somatotopic
maps, one posterior
and the other one
anterior somatotopic
map(Homunuclus)
for the entire body
receiving in addition
visual and auditory
inputs.
• Cerebellar Cortex is consists of three
histological layers
• Outer, molecular
• Middle, granular
• Inner, medullary
The cerebellum hemispheres
control the ipsilateral side of body

• Lesion of cerebellum causes

so called release phenomenon
that are expression of the
loss of negative feedback
– Intesion tremor when try to touch
an object.
