Insertion of Nasogastric Tube

(NG)
Purpose
To administer tube and medication to clients unable

to eat bye mouth.


To remove stomach content for laboratory analysis.

To lavage (wash)the stomach in case of poisoning or

overdose of medication.
Equipments
Tray
NG Tube
Syringe 60cc
Tape
Scissors
Stethoscope
Gloves
Xylocaine jell
Procedure
Check doctor order for NG tube insertion.
Explain the procedure to the client/family.
Collect equipments.
Cut one strip of tape or as required.
Wash hands and put on clean gloves.
Place the client in appropriate position:
Child: supine with rolled towel under head and neck.
Adult: fowlers (Support the head on a pillow)

Measure the tube for approximate length of insertion and


marks the point with a small tape.
 Measure from the tip of the nose to the ear lobe and to
the xiphoid process.
• Lubricate the tube with Xylocaine jell.
• Insert the tube with its natural curve towards the client,

into the selected nostril. Ask the client to hyperextend the


neck, and gently advance the tube towards the
nasopharynx. While inserting NG tube encourage client
to swallow.

If the tube meet resistance , with draw it ,relubricate it
and insert it in another nostril.
If the client gags, stop passing the tube for a moment,
have the client rest, and take few breath and take sips of
water, while passing, check mouth for coiling of tube.
Confirm the placement of the tube by:
aspirating stomach content and checking for acidity.
Injecting air (0.5-1 ml in premature or small
infants,5ml in older children).adult (10-20 ml) and
listening to pop sound on stomach.
• Secure tube the upper lip and cheek.
