Can tell what a floodplain is from this

Floodplain zoning
How does it work?

Flood-plain zoning reduces the risk and cost of damages flooding

causes. Local governments may pass flood zone laws that restrict
land use in such areas. These laws prevent or limit building and
development in flood zones to lessen the risks associated with
flooding.
How are floodplains formed
Features such as oxbow lakes and seasonal wetlands are often a part of floodplains
created through erosion and deposition. A meandering stream can contribute to a
floodplain’s aggradation, or build-up in land elevation, as well as its erosion.
Concepts of floodplain
zoning

The basic concept of flood plain zoning

is to regulate land use in the flood plains
to restrict the damage caused by floods.
Causes of Floodplain Zoning
Cloud Burst: Cloud Burst occurs due to intense precipitation in a short duration which
can sometimes be accompanied by hail and storm and can cause a flood. These natural
incidents occur at the mountain slopes, and water runs down towards the plains,
causing a flood. Cyclone: Cyclones occur in a low-pressure zone where winds rotate
inwardly.
Features
Determining Developmental Activities: It aims at determining the locations and the extent of
areas for developmental activities in such a fashion that the damage is reduced to a minimum.
Adds Limitations: It envisages laying down limitations on development of both the
unprotected as well as protected areas. In the unprotected areas, boundaries of areas in
which developmental activities will be banned, are to be established to prevent indiscriminate
growth. In the protected areas, only such developmental activities can be allowed, which will
not involve heavy damage in case the protective measures fail. Utility: Zoning cannot remedy
existing situations, although, it will definitely help in minimizing flood damage in new
developments. Flood plain zoning is not only necessary in the case of floods by rivers but it is
also useful in reducing the damage caused by drainage congestion particularly in urban areas.
