SIMPLE PAST

(Part one)
Use:
• The Simple Past is used to talk about actions or situations in the past. It is
also called Past Simple.
Example:
I visited Berlin last week.
Andrew watched TV yesterday.
My friends went to Paris.
RULES FOR CHANGE THE REGULAR
VERB TO ITS PAST FORM:
1ST. Verb ends in E MUTE, We have to add D
Dance = danced
Close = closed
2ND.- Verb ends in Y and before there´s a consonat, we´re going to replace
Y to i + ed.
Apply = applied
Study = studied
3RD.- verb ends in CONSONANT – VOWEL – CONSONAT, double the final consonant + ED. we
don´t have to apply if the verb ends in: W,X OR Y. Only apply when the stress is in the last
syllable.

CLAP = CLAPPED
STOP = STOPPED
PERMIT = PERMITTED
4RD.- IF YOU CAN´T APPLY THE LAS RULES ONLY WE ADD ed
FIX = FIXED
LISTEN = LISTENED
ENJOY = ENJOYED
WORK = WORKED
Irregular verb means that the conjugation is
not based on the rules . This means that
verbal conjugation is a game of memorization.
EXAMPLE:
BUY = BOUGHT
DRIVE = DROVE
HAVE = HAD
WRITE = WROTE

(part two)
AFFIRMATIVE: SUBJECT + VERB in past + COMPLEMENT.
Example:
I wrote a letter (write)
He studied english (study)
They went to my home (go)
My cousin watched tv (watch)
NEGATIVE: SUBJECT + did + not + VERB in base form + COMPLEMENT.
Example:

I didn´t write a letter.


He didn´t study English.
They didn´t go to my home.
My cousin didn´t watch tv.
INTERROGATIVE: Did + SUBJECT + VERB in base form + COMPLEMENT?
Example:

Did He study English?


YES, HE DID / NO, HE DID NOT.
Did They Watch tv in my home?
YES, THEY DID / NO, THEY DID NOT.
