Consider a multiple degree-of-freedom system with mass
and stiffness matrices M and K, when
the equations of motion are written relative to physical
coordinates. The eigen-solutions of this
system are found, and the modal matrix and principle of
orthogonality are used to transform the
M and K matrices to their decoupled forms. The eigen-
solutions of these new, decoupled
matrices can now be found. Are the two sets of eigen-
solutions (obtained for the two sets of
matrices, coupled and decoupled) the same? Clearly
show the steps in justifying your answer.
