MULTIPLE
COMPARISONS
Supposed we want to compare the monthly rent for a one bedroom
apartment in three Barangays in Tandag City: Dagocdoc, Telaje, and
Bongtud.
• Reminder: With ANOVA, we can discover that at least two of the
mean rent costs are not equal. However, if we reject the null
hypothesis, that is, in these case of three groups,
H0: μA = μB = μC,
and accept the stated alternative—that the means are not all equal—
we still do not know which of the population means are equal and
which are different?
• Problem: ANOVA does not tell us which means are not equal– only
that some significant difference exists.
Multiple Comparisons Tests

 a procedure that acts as the extention

of the ANOVA that is used to
determine exactly which pairs of
means are significantly different.
Assumptions:
o Multiple comparison is only necessary
when you reject the null hypothesis
and if there are three or more groups.

o No multiple comparison if the

ANOVA is not significant.
