What is a
Louspeaker
> Loudspeakers are devices that allow sound
amplification. Called speakers or loudspeakers
according to the country, loudspeakers are electrical
transducers: they convert the current of electricity into
a sound wave. This mechanical energy is then
transformed into sound waves that propagate through
the air. a loudspeaker can be used to listen to music,
transmit a message to an audience and amplify the
overall sound in a given area.

The first loudspeaker

Thomas Edison, Magnavox and Victrola were pioneers in the
design and creation of the predecessor of loudspeakers,
from 1880 to 1920; the phonograph. How did it work?
Sound vibration waves were recorded from a spiral groove
in the surface of a rotating disc, called a record. When the
sound is reproduced, the surface rotates in a similar manner
and transmits the sound by tracing the waves inscribed in

the groove. The sound it reproduces is smooth, clean and
with great amplifying capacity. Nowadays, it has become a
vintage item, with a great value in the antique market.

In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell patented his first loudspeaker,
as part of his telephone, capable of reproducing intelligible
speech. Then, in 1877, Enrst Siemens unveiled an improved
version. Subsequently, Horace Short patented in 1898 a
design for a loudspeaker driven by a compressed air
system.

Now, the combination of all the advances throughout history results in
what we know today as a loudspeaker. But... How is sound
transmitted from a loudspeaker today? The double procedure is
called electrical-mechanical-acoustic and we can differentiate it in
two stages:
1. The electrical waves are converted into mechanical energy.
2. The mechanical energy is converted into acoustic frequency waves.

Something that may seem really simple to us and an item practically of
first use, installed in our smartphones, vehicles and any electronic
device, is the result of more than one hundred and fifty years of
progress and evolution.
