HEAT OF A REACTION

Your are provided with the following

K: 1M HCl
L. 0.2g Magnesium ribbon
M. 1 g Magnesium carbonate
THEORY
You are required to determine the heat of formation of Magnesium carbonate
In the first case: determine enthalpy change for the reaction
Mg + 2HCl MgCl2 +H2 Heat change?
In the second case, determine the heat change for the reaction
MgCO3 +2HCl MgCl2 + H2O +CO2 Heat change?
1. Measure out 50cm3 of 1M HCl acid solution into 100cm3 beaker.
2. Determine the initial temperature T1
3. Add 0.2g of Magnesium ribbon in (1.) above solution swirl the mixture and record the
temperature . Find the temperature T2.
4. Calculate the heat evolved during the chemical reaction.
HEAT OF A REACTION
PROCEDURE B
1. Measure out 50cm3 of 1M HCl solution into 100 cm3 beaker.
2. Determine the initial temperature T3.
3. Add 1.0g of Magnesium carbonate in 1 above solution swirl the mixture and record the final
temperature T4.
4. Calculate the heat evolved during the chemical reaction.
NOTE THAT:
In your calculations neglect the heat absorbed by container.
GIVEN THAT:
The enthalpy of formation of CO2 = -394kj/mol
The enthalpy of formation of H2O = -286kj/mol
Specific heat capacity of solution = 4.2j/Gk
Density of solution = 1g/cm3
Assume no change in volume of solution.
Calculate the enthalpy of formation of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3). Draw the energy level diagram
