Lecture 1 [Link]. Program
Course Objectives
1. Introduce student to separation processes and its role in
chemical industries.
2. Explain the diffusion concept and use Fick’s law to predict
flux.
3. Calculation of diffusion coefficient for real and ideal gas as
well as mixture of gases, in liquid and the effect of solid
presence on flux and diffusion coefficient for the above cases.
4. Explain convection concept and its law using dimensional
analysis to obtain mass transfer correlations, analogy between
heat, mass and momentum transfer.
5. Defining overall mass transfer coefficient and apply the two
resistance theory for two phases.
6. Explain the different mass transfer equipment and their
advantages and disadvantages.
