 Facts about Vocabulary Acquisition

• Vocabulary is the knowledge of words and word meanings

( Diamond & Guttohon, 2006 )
• Vocabulary acquisition is very crucial to academic development
( Baker et. Al., 1991 )
• Vocabulary knowledge is knowledege; the knowledge of a word not only
implies a definition but also how that word fits into the world
( Stahl, 2005 ).
• It is known to play a key role in a person’s profeciency in both is and her
first and second language and is shown to be a best predictor of reading
comprehension in L1 and L2
( Coady, 1997 ).

• It has also been proven to correlate highly with global assessment of
writing quality and with general language profeciency scores
( Bachman & Palmer, 1996).
• Studies have revealed that students are required to understand 95% of
the words they read for text comprehension ( Laufer1997).
• If one does not understand most of the words he or she reads, he or she
can not possibly comprehend as a whole. Other researchers have
approximated that learners have to know at least 5000 words for them to
effectively transfer learning strategies from L1 to L2
( Laufer 1997).
• Vocabulary acquisition is not something that can ever be mastered
overnight; it is something that expands and deepens over a course of a
lifetime ( Diamond & Gutlohn, 2006)

✦ Analyze affixes and roots;
✦ Check for L1 cognate:
✦ Analyze any available picture or gestures;
✦ Guess from textual context;
✦ Find a word;s meaning through bilingual dictionaries and
monolingual dictionaries;
✦ Master large number of words by using word lists and
flashcard

Social ( SOC )
✦ Asking teachers for an L1 translation;
✦ Asking teachers for paraphrase or synonym of new word;
✦ Asking teachers for a sentence including the new word;
✦ Asking classmates for meaning;
✦ Discovering new meaning through group work activity;
✦ Studying and practicing meaning in a group;
✦ Teachers check the students flashcards or word lists;
✦ Interacting with native speakers.
