PIPES MANUFACTUREING PROCESSES

AND
DIMENSIONAL STANDARDS
PIPES MANUFACTERING PROCESSES

•Metallic pipes can be manufactured using several methods. Each method will
produce pipe with certain characteristics.
•These characteristics includes; strength, pressure limitation, wall thickness…etc
Three methods will be mentioned in this presentation:
• seamless pipe
• Butt-welded pipe
• Spiral-weld pipe
•Spiral-wound pipe can not be used for pressure applications.
Seamless Pipes

 Formed by piercing mandrel to near-molten metallic rod to produce pipe

with no seam.
Piercing Process
Butt-Weld Pipes
 It is formed by passing a metallic plate through shaper rollers that will
produce a circular hollow product.
 Squeezing the two ends of the plate together and weld them to produce
weld or seam.
 Plate: Flat product, minimum thickness approximately 6 mm and
minimum width approximately 300 mm.
Spiral Wound Pipes
It is formed by twisting a strips of metal in to a spiral shape and then weld
where the edge will meet and form the seam.

Strip: Flat product, maximum width approximately 300 mm and maximum

thickness approximately 1/6 of the width.
