PERSPECTIVE
- Freud is the father of psychology

- His psychodynamic approach to the


human psyche led to offshoots and
adaptations

- This started of during his lifetime


CARL JUNG
(1875-1965)
- Jung was one of the first members of Freud’s
inner circle

- He had hoped that Jung would be his protégé


and carry on his life’s work

- Jung deviated in such way that he disagreed


with Freud’s notion that sexual drive is the
primary motivator of a person
Erik Erikson
(1909-1993)
- Developed a theory that deviates from the id-
driven impulses

- Focused on life-long development and its


stages

- Gives emphasis to the role of societal and


cultural influences to development
Alfred Adler
(1870-1937)
- Felt that Freud’s underemphasis of the ego was
a critical flaw in his base theory

- Adler felt that compensation for feelings of


inferiority is very important in the formation of
personality and psychological functioning
Karen Horney
(1885-1952)
- Took Freud’s approach of the penis envy and
put it into the women’s context and
circumstance
- The common trait between these revisionist
was that they diverged from Freud’s focus on
the id and instead gave attention to the ego

- This greatly helped the formation of ego


psychology
