What is an “Oxygen Absorber”?


Oxygen absorber is a very effective product used for eliminating the oxygen
present inside a particular packaging.

Why “Oxygen Absorbers” is needed and how


does it work?
It allow food processors and exporters to extend the shelf life of packed food
products by preventing oxidation, rancidity, discoloration, loss of flavor and
crunchiness. The absence of moisture and oxygen in the package environment
retards the growth of bacteria, molds, mildew and insects for an optimum shelf
life and quality.

What is the main goal of an “Oxygen


Absorber”?

• It’s main goal is to reduce oxygen


to .01% or less. This can be
achieved through placing the
appropriate number of packets in a
certain size of container.

• Even in a vacuum sealed


packaging, “Total” vacuum is not possible.
This is because air contains around 21% oxygen at normal atmospheric pressure (the
rest is 78% nitrogen, and 1% other gases).

What are the common factors that contributes to

• Permeation – The penetration of


permeate (such as solid, liquid, & gas)
through a solid.

Different types of packaging material has


their own “OTW” (Oxygen Transmission
Rate) and “WVTR” (Water Vapor
Transmission Rate).

In terms of packaging, permeation will eventually take place which means more oxygen
will enter the packaging and will get contact with the product inside.

• Residual air after packaging sealing - oxygen can still remain inside the
packaging. Even substitute gas is already infused into the packaging, a certain
amount of oxygen will still enter during the sealing process.

Main purpose of Nitrogen infusion is to fill up the Upon pulling out the tube/pipe, small amount of air

Nitrogen infusion only works during sealing while “Oxygen absorber” will
continuously absorb oxygen in days, weeks, months, or years after sealing of the

• Defective or weak seal or peeling – Sometimes after the sealing process, there will
be instances that after some time, some part of the seal will be weakened due to
deterioration caused by handling or sometimes cause by inefficient sealing.

small as it can’t be seen by the naked eye.

when air reacts with food components. When fats in foods become rancid, oxidation is
