Overview
 The Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) is an
innovative electric transportation system
 Developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of
Science and Technology (KAIST)
 The battery in the OLEV can be charged while
the vehicle is in motion
 A potential solution for the next-generation
electric public transportation system
Problems and solution
Previous automotive makers versions:
+ There are technical and economic limitations
+ Weight and size of the battery
+ Cost of the battery
+ Long battery charging time
+ The limited availability of charging stations
Solution:
 Overcome the limitations of battery-powered electric vehicles
 Battery-powered transportation system that remotely picks up electricity from power transmitters buried
underground
 The system utilizes the wireless charging technology
OLEV SYSTEM
 Consists of vehicles and power transmitters
 Includes the integrated system that consists of a vehicle or a fleet of vehicles together with
the charging units
 The battery in the OLEV can be wirelessly charged from the transmitters using the
noncontact charging mechanism
 Charging while vehicles are in motion
OLEV SYSTEM
The main tasks:
 How to allocate economically the power transmitters on the road
 How to determine the right battery capacity
Performance:
 60 kW of power may be wirelessly transferred from the power transmitters with 80% efficiency
Operation:
 The wireless power transfer system for the OLEV is com- posed of an inverter, an inductive cable, a pickup device, a
capacitor, a battery, and a motor
 Power from the 60-Hz supply is converted to a frequency of 20 kHz by the inverter
 A current of 200 A flows through the inductive cable.
 The magnetic flux generated from the cable is collected by the pickup device to generate dc power for the vehicle
motor.
