HISTORY

The history of Brazil begins with the arrival of the first indigenous peoples, thousands of years ago by crossing the Bering land bridge into Alaska and then entering the rest of North and Central America.

It is widely accepted that the European first to discover Brazil was Portuguese Pedro Alvares Cabral on April 22, 1500. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Brazil was a colony of Portugal. On September 7, 1822, the country declared its independence from Portugal and became a constitutional monarchy, the Empire of Brazil.

HISTORY
A military coup in 1889 established a republican government. The country has seen a dictatorship (1930 1934 and 1937 1945) and a period of military rule

(1964 1985).

Geographic Location
The country of Brazil occupies roughly half of South America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil covers a total area of 8,514,215 km2 (3,287,357 sq mi) which includes 8,456,510 km2 (3,265,080 sq mi) of land and 55,455 km2 (21,411 sq mi) of water. The highest point in Brazil is Pico da Neblina at 2,994 m (9,823 ft). Brazil is bordered by the countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The currency since 1994 is the Real (formerly crozier) equal to 100 cents. There are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents. Notes: Notes are in denominations of 100, 50, 10, 5 and 1 real. The coins are a real and 50, 10, 5 and 1 cent. Note: replaced the crozier real in July 1994, which in turn replaced the cross in March 1990.

TRADITIONS
Nearly 50 percent of the population is under twenty years of age. Despite massive economic problems, Brazil is often regarded as a potentially rich country with a strong industrial sector, large agricultural production, and rich natural resources. An example of its potential for efficient utilization of resources is its processing of sugarcane into ethyl alcohol for fueling 1.5 Million Brazilian cars.

TRADITIONS
Another tradition is the Brazilian Carnival is an annual celebration that takes place forty days before Easter (marking the beginning of Lent). It has some variations with its European counterpart and also differences over the Brazilian territory.

MUSIC OF BRAZIL
The Music of Brazil reflects the diverse culture of the Brazilian nation. Some of the popular musical genres known from Brazil are the Choro, Samba, Bossa Nova and Brazilian Popular Music.
