Alternative Medicine

(Traditional)
What is altrernative medicine
› The term "alternative medicine" refers to medical procedures
that are employed in place of conventional (mainstream)
therapies. It is sometimes referred to as "integrative" or
"complementary" medicine by some people. In the United
States, more than half of adults report using alternative
medicine.
› Describes any form of medicine or healing that does not fall
into conventional medical practice.
What are the different types of alternative
medecine?
› Traditional alternative medicine. This field includes the more
mainstream and accepted forms of therapy, such as acupuncture,
homeopathy, and Oriental practices. These therapies have been
practiced for centuries worldwide. Traditional alternative medicine
may include:
• Acupuncture
• Ayurveda
• Homeopathy
• Naturopathy
• Chinese or Oriental medicine
Acupuncture

-is a form of complementary

therapy that involves inserting
very thin needles into the body.
Practitioners insert needles at
different locations and depths to
treat different health issues.
Ayurveda

- Ayurveda, thus, means "knowledge

of life." Ayurveda promotes specific
lifestyle interventions and natural
remedies to restore harmony
between the body, mind, spirit, and
environment because it bases its
theory on the notion that disease
results from an imbalance or stress
in a person's consciousness.
Homeopathy
-  a medical system based on the
belief that the body can cure itself.
Those who practice it use tiny
amounts of natural substances, like
plants and minerals. They believe
these stimulate the healing process.
Naturopathy
-  a system that uses natural remedies
to help the body heal itself. It
embraces many therapies, including
herbs, massage, acupuncture, exercise
, and nutritional counseling.
Chinese or Oriental
medicine

- Oriental medicine is the oldest codified

system of medicine in the world. It restores
health and balance by treating illness and
disease through the Five Major Branches of
Oriental Medicine, which include: acupuncture;
Chinese herbal medicine; oriental nutrition and
dietary therapy; tuina or oriental bodywork; as
well as tai chi and qi gong.
