Objective of the Course:
• Students will achieve competency in introducing studies
on meaning in language, indicated by an awareness of
the various aspects of meaning in language and
experience and ability in analyzing meaning in verbal
communication.
• Students will have knowledge of pragmatic theory, they
able to apply pragmatic theory to discourse and context,
they can apply pragmatic theory to discourse teaching,
and have a good attitude towards language development
in various social contexts in fostering good language and
literary attitudes for students as prospective teachers.
 
COURSE DESCRIPTION
• Semantics and Pragmatics provides an introductory study
on meaning in language with a focus on English, covering
such topics as propositions, referring expressions, universes
of discourse, synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, homonymy,
polysemy, derivation, participant roles, and speech acts,
using language in social interaction, and the effects their
use of language has on the other participants in an act of
communication and also examines the application of
pragmatic study in English language teaching and learning.
Topics to discuss include deixis, conversational implicature,
presuppositions, discourse structure, and pragmatics in
English language teaching, Pragmatics and Philosophy of
Language and Pragmatics and language Acquisition.
