• The city dates back to the
1830s, when the first Anglo-
American settlers arrived in
the area, then part of
Mexico. The City is named
for Stephen F. Austin, the
“Father of Texas.”

• Austin has long been home to classic industries (metallurgy, food, timber
industry) but at the end of the twentieth century the city had become an
important center of high technology in the United States, nicknamed
Silicon Hills.
• Austin is also home to the iconic University of Texas campus. The city
is famous for its eclectic concerts featuring country, blues and rock. Its
many parks and lakes are popular for hiking, cycling, swimming or
taking a boat trip. To the south, the Formula 1 circuit of the Americas
hosts the United States Grand Prix.
• With a population of 820,611 (2011 U.S. Census), Austin is the 13th
most populous city in the United States; the fourth most populous
city in Texas.
• Residents of Austin are known as Austinites. They include a diverse mix of
government employees, college students, musicians, high-tech workes…
The city's official slogan promotes Austin as "The Live Music Capital of the
World", a reference to the city's many musicians and live music venues.
• Austin is known for its vibrant music scene.
Formerly a center of country and blues
music, it now celebrates a variety of genres
including rock, folk, jazz, and Latino music.
More than 100 live music venues can be
founded. Dozens of local recording studios
and record labels make significant economic
contributions.
• The South by Southwest Conference,
devoted to music, film, and interactive
media, is held each year in March. The city
is also a favorite moviemaking location.
