JEAN PIAGET
• Born August 9, 1896
• Died September 16, 1980
“Everything that a person
experiences is a continuous
process of assimilations and
accommodations”. Piaget
described four main periods in
cognitive development.
PIAGET FOUR STAGES OF COGNITIVE
DEVELOPMENT
Sensorimotor stage Concrete operational
stage
Birth to 2 years Ages 7 to 11

Preoperational Formal operational

stage stage
Ages 2 to 7 Ages 12 and Up
Jean Piaget’s Concrete Operational Stage
►Concrete operation is the third stage
in Piaget’s theory of cognitive
development
►It spans from age 7 to approximately
11 years old
►In this stage, Children have better
understanding of their thinking skills.
Children begin to think logically about
concrete events, but have difficulty
understanding abstract or
hypothetical concepts, thus most of
them still have a hard time at
problem-solving
LOGIC REVERSIBILIT
Inductive Logic One Yof the most
-Involves thinking from a specific important developments
experience to a general principles in this stage is an
Deductive Logic understanding of
-Using a general principle to reversibility, or awareness
determine the outcome of specific that actions can be
event reversed.
Cognitive Milestone
Elementary
- Aged children learns in
Sequential manners, meaning
they need to understand
numbers before they can
perform a mathematical
equation.
Each milestone that
develops is dependent upon the
previous milestone they
achieve.
Young primary – aged
children can do the following:

 Can tell left from right.

 Can able to speak and express
themselves.
 In schools, they share about
themselves and their families.
 During play, they practice using
the words and language they
learn from schools.
They start to understand times and
days of the week
They enjoy rhymes, riddles and jokes
They are learning letters and words
By six, most can read words or
combinations of words
INFORMATION-
PROCESSING SKILLS
Several theorist argue that:
 Like a computer, the human mind is a system that can process information
 They also believe that the minds receives information, performs operations
to change its form and content, stores and locate it and generates responses
from it.
IMPLICATIONS TO CHILD CARE,
EDUCATION AND PARENTING
 Helping children draw on their strengths and promote growth
in their weaknesses.
 Encouraging children to read more every day to increase their
vocabulary.
 Bringing children to museums, art exhibits and historical
landmarks to widen their perspective about the world and
people.
 Lessening children’s screen time and increasing their personal
and face-to-face interactions.
