1. DEFINITION OF FUNCTION

A function (mapping) is a relation that pairs each domain member with


exactly one codomain member. If the function is expressed as ( f: A → B) then
it means a relation that pairs every member of set A with exactly one member of
set B.

Examples of Functions in everyday life:


- Human partner by date of birth. Every human being has a date of birth. But
one date of birth can be owned by several humans.

It is known the set of :
P = {1,2,3,4,5}
Q = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10}
The defined relation is “half of”

To be able to express using a function formula, consider the pattern of the following set of ordered
pairs:
{ (1,2), (2,4), (3,6), (4,8), (5,10) }

1=x2 If the member of P is said to be x and the member of Q is said to be y then:


2=x4 x=y
3=x6 y = 2x
4=x8 the equation of the function obtained is f(x) = 2x, for each x member of P
5 = x 10
