WEEK 5 – MODULE 5

BIODIVERSITY
•Organisms in the ecosystem are interdependent
upon each other for survival and harmonious
existence.
•This interdependence demonstrates the
importance of biodiversity to an ecosystem.
Energy Transfer From One Organism to Another

•Organisms need energy to sustain life. Every activity

that organisms do in the ecosystem requires energy.
• The flow of energy is the most important factor that
controls what kinds of organisms live in an ecosystem.
• The reduction in the amount of available energy limits
the number of organisms in the food chain.
.
Energy Transfer From One Organism to Another

•The producers such as the plants are capable of

converting energy from the sun into chemical energy and
store it as food.
• Organisms that consume food for their energy supply
are called consumers.
Food Chain
• A linear network of links in a food web starting from
producer and ending at an apex predator or
decomposer species.
Decomposers act on dead organisms and change these into
simple nutrients which plants can use again
Food Pyramid

• Biomass is the total

mass of organisms
in a food chain or
food web. Only 10%
of biomass and
energy are
transferred to the
next level.

Low and High Biodiversity
• High biodiversity means there is a great number of
different organisms living in a specific area.
Low and High Biodiversity
• Low biodiversity means there is a has least number of
species.
