TABLES & GRAPHS
Tables and graphs are both ways to
organize and arrange data so that it is more
easily understood by the viewer. Tables and
graphs are related in the sense that the
information used in tables is frequently also
used for the basis of graphs.
COLUMN GRAPH
Column graphs are similar to bar graphs and
line graphs. All three have grid lines going
horizontally and vertically. The column graph
is more similar to the bar graph in that it is
used more for one time or single events
rather than continuous events.
HORIZONTALLY
VERTICALLY
TABLES
Tables are an excellent way to display data or
information in an organized fashion. By
putting data in tables one can easily from
there set up a graph to illustrate the data.
CELL
ROW
CIRCLE/PIE GRAPHS
Circle or pie graphs are particularly good illustrations
when considering how many parts of a whole are
inception. In the table below both the number of
hours in a whole day devoted to certain activities is
listed as well as the percent of time for each of these
activities. The pie chart is then divided very much as a
baker's pie would be into slices that represent the
proportional amounts of time spent on each activity.
SLICE
To the right of the pie chart is a legend that
tells which color stands for which category. In
addition, the percents are also near the pie
slice that stands for that particular amount of
time spent.
LEGEND PERCENTAGE
LINE GRAPHS
A line graph is most useful in displaying data
or information that changes continuously
over time.
BAR GRAPHS
Bar graphs are an excellent way to show
results that are one time, that aren't
continuous - especially samplings such as
surveys, inventories, etc.
EXAMPLE
By using Polyas model of problem solving ( 2001 )
There are 4 steps to follow :
a) Understand Problems
b) Create a plan
c) Carry out the problem
d) Look back
a. Understand problem :
QUESTION : What colors are the most favorite of the class ? QUESTION : What colors are the most favorite of the class ?
8
6
4
2
0
b. Create a plan
1. identify all the info :
Red has 8 numbers
Orange has 4 numbers
Yellow has 3 numbers
Green has 6 numbers
Blue has 5 numbers
Purple has 4 numbers
c. Carry out the problem
To make it easy, enter the data in tabular form
Question : What colors are the most favorite of the class ?
from the table above, we can see that the red colours has the
highest number of the other colors, with a total of 8 numbers.
Types of colors Numbers
Red 8
Orange 4
Yellow 3
Green 6
Blue 5
Purple 4

so the answer is RED.
