Dear students, I hope you are safe. The lesson of today's online class is very
enjoyable. Because, it is one kinds of game. Word game . Creating new words . If I
tell you, I'm giving you a word, you can make a new word by putting a letter or a
group of letters at the beginning or at the end of it. I believe you will all be able to do
that.

This way we can create more than one new word based on a word. It is called in
English grammar Affix . It is divided into two parts: prefixes and suffixes.
 What is a prefix?
A prefix is a group of letters that come at the beginning of the
word that can change the meaning of the word.

উপসর্গ কী?
উপসর্গ হল অক্ষরের একটি গ্রুপ যা শব্দের শুরুতে আসে এবং যা শব্দের
অর্থ পরিবর্ত ন করতে পারে।

Some examples of prefixes:

•Re+write= rewrite
•Dis+agree= disagree
 What is a suffix?
A suffix is a letter or group of letters at the end of a word to form
another word or new meaning.

প্রত্যয় কী?
প্রত্যয় হ'ল একটি শব্দের শেষে একটি বর্ণ বা অক্ষরের গ্রুপ যা নতু ন অর্থবোধক শব্দ গঠন করে।

Some examples of suffixes:

•Brave+ly= bravely, swift+ly= swiftly, smooth+ly= smoothly
•Cheer+ful= cheerful, hope+ful= hopeful
•Kind+ness= kindness, Fear+less fearless
Building your vocabulary is important to speak English. Adding affixes to root words is an easy
and interesting way to develop your vocabulary quickly.
আপনার শব্দভাণ্ডার তৈরি করা ইংরেজী বলতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Root শব্দের সাথে affixes যুক্ত করা
আপনার শব্দভাণ্ডারের দ্রুত বিকাশের একটি সহজ এবং আকর্ষণীয় উপায়।
Many new words are formed by adding an affix to the beginning or end of a root word. Let us
see the meaning of root words, prefix and suffix. A root word is a word in its simplest form. A
root word has nothing added to it. Root words are also called base words. For eg: do/ heat/ write/
happy/ pack, etc. If you add an affix to a root or base word, you change the meaning of the word.
For Example: Cook is a base word. Affixes are word that are added before or after the root word
and change the meaning of a root or base word.
মূল শব্দের শুরু বা শেষের দিকে একটি affix যোগ করে অনেকগুলি নতু ন শব্দ গঠিত হয়। আসুন আমরা মূল
শব্দের অর্থ, উপসর্গ এবং প্রত্যইয়ের অর্থ বুঝে নিই । মূল শব্দের অর্থ একটি সহজ শব্দ। একটি মূল শব্দ এর
সাথে কিছু ই যুক্ত হয়নি। মূল শব্দকে ভিত্তি শব্দও বলা হয়। যেমন: do/ heat/ write/ happy/ pack, etc.
you উদাহরণস্বরূপ: cook একটি base বা ভিত্তি শব্দ। Affixes এমন শব্দ যা মূল শব্দের আগে বা পরে যুক্ত হয়
এবং একটি মূল বা বেস শব্দের অর্থ পরিবর্ত ন করে।
Prefixes and Suffixes are both Affixes. Prefixes are word parts that come at the
beginning of the root word. Suffixes are word parts that come at the end of the root or
base words.

উপসর্গ এবং প্রত্যয় উভয়ই Affixes . উপসর্গগুলি শব্দের অংশ যা মূল শব্দের শুরুতে আসে।
প্রত্যয়গুলি শব্দের অংশ যা মূল বা বেস শব্দের শেষে আসে।

Un+ Cook+ ed = UnCookEd

Un —- Prefix
Cook —– Root or Base Word
Ed —– Suffix
 We can also learn some examples where we have prefix and suffix
attached to a root word:

Uncomfortable == Un – prefix, Comfort – root word, able – suffix.

Irregularly — Ir == prefix, Regular – root word and arly is the suffix

Disorganised – dis – prefix , organize – root word and ed is the suffix.

They are all opposite of the words comfortable, regularly and organized.
