Control and Tuning of Power Converters
 Control over a power converter is a key
feature in any power delivery system.
 In an inverter module, the power
transfer can be controlled by the type
of electronic switch used.
 These switches can be of the following.

Diode MOSFET SCR

IGBT
Control and Tuning of Power Converters …
 For example, a diode allows unidirectional
flow of current, hence power.
 Half wave rectifier verses full wave
rectifier is a good example.
 Consider the Half Wave Rectification:

 Consider the Full Wave Rectification:
 Both negative and positive waveforms
are permitted to pass the rectifier diode
and hence the power is maximized.
Control and Tuning of Power Converters …
 More control of power can be achieved
with other power electronic devices such
as IGBT, SCR or FET because the part
of the input sine wave signal is let o pass
at will.
Control and Tuning of Power Converters …
 Consider a half wave Thyristor controlled
rectification.
 More flexibility is achieved.

 A Triac can let the negative wave pass by
the circuit.
 Converts a fixed AC voltage to variable
Control and Tuning of Power Converters …

 Tuning of power converters is a key issue

for reliable delivery of power to
controlled loads.
 It is also necessary to have different
converters work in conjunction with one
another.
 In the tuning process not only the
voltage level but also the frequency of
the power supply is taken into
consideration.
