KEY STAGES

S1 LOCOMOTOR Ages 5-8 (K-Grade 3)

The skills used by an individual to move


from one place to another. These skills
include rolling, balancing, sliding, jogging,
running, leaping, jumping, hopping,
dodging, galloping and skipping. These are
the basic movements that we need be able to
combine to perform a more advance skill like
making a lay up in basketball

RUNNING (sprinting)
Step on one foot followed by the other
foot continuously. Using longer strides and
faster speed than walking

HOPPING
Hopping is a one footed skill. Students
stand on one foot and will hop with the one
foot. The opposite foot is bent at the knee and
trailing behind the back of the student.

SKIPPING
skipping is a rhythmical combination of two
skills: the step and the hop. Skipping is a
step and a hop on one foot, followed by a
step and a hop on the other foot.

JUMPING
Jumping is a two footed skill. Students will
stand with both feet together and will jump
with both feet together. The students should
work on using their knees as shock
so that they can

GALLOPING
It's essentially a series of repeated single-
leg jumps using rolling or flat foot contacts.
The front foot takes a large step forward
while the second foot stays in place. The
back foot then takes a step forward but
always stays behind the front foot

CHANGE OF DIRECTION
Change of direction training, by definition, is
any activity with closed skills that involves a
rapid whole-body movement with a pre-planned
change of velocity or direction.

S1 NON-LOCOMOTOR

Non-locomotor skills are fundamental body


movements that do not incorporate traveling.
They are stability skills that include
movements of limbs or body parts, and
sometimes even the whole body. These are
the basic movements that we need to
combine in doing sports such as shooting in
basketball and dribbling in soccer

SWINGING
Start by standing on one leg, and swing the
other leg forward and back. Use small swings
that progress into larger swings as tolerated.

a pivot is the central point, pin, or shaft on which a
mechanism turns or oscillates. a pivot is performed
by keeping one foot stationary, while moving your
other foot to tu rn you body to face different
directions

SQUATTING
A squat is a strength exercise in which the trainee
lowers their hips from a standing position and then
stands back up.

LUNGING
A lunge is a lower body exercise that involves stepping
and bending your front and back leg. To perform a lunge
stand straight up facing forward with your spine and
pelvis in a neutral position.

MANIPULATIVE
Movement skills that require an ability to handle an
object or piece of equipment with control. They
include skills such as kicking, striking, dribbling or
catching a ball. Can also be referred to as 'the gross
motor skills that we use for example kick a ball.
These are the movements you see in sports such as
basketball,soccer, tennis etc.

CATCHING
The deliberate attempt to move a live ball between
two teammates", a definition which might equally
apply across other sports equally well, albeit with a
change to the item being passed where appropriate.
For catching cues, I always go over the ready
position which is hands up and knees bent.
Then I teach them our catching cues:
Reach – hands out toward the ball
Grab – grab the ball
Give – bring it into your body
