IRONY

VERBAL IRONY
 IT is used when a person wants to express something using speech which says the opposite of
what they mean
 Eg; it is a very cold day ,a person might say something like using this method might say
something like is’nt it warm today
 Situational irony
 This is used when a situation does not have the outcome which was expected in the first
instance.
 Eg; 1.The local fire station has burnt to the ground –this is situational irony since this is the
place which should be more safe from fire.
 2. The pilot had a fear of heights.
 3.The teacher failed the test .
 4.The marriage counsellor files for divorce.
 DRAMATIC IRONY
In a real life situation ,it is applied when something happens and the person within the situation is unaware of
the true reality.
1. Eg;1. when the king Oedipus ,who killed his father ,says that he will banish his father’s killer when he
finds him
2. if a person were to be mocking a friend for losing his wallet, but did not realise that he had also lost his
own wallet.
