 DEFINITION -

Normally, The Duration Of Pregnancy Is From 37 To 41

weeks. In some cases this period can increase and cause risk
for new born to survive in extra uterine life. Post maturity
defines when the baby born after completion of 42 weeks of
gestation or about 294 days of intrauterine life. It is also
known as post-term, pregnancy, post term baby.
• INCIDENCE –
Incidence Rate Is About 7-10% Of All Deliveries, Babies Born In Post
Maturity Period.
 ETIOLOGY
Etiology Is Unknown But There Are Some Conditions In Which Post
Maturity Have Been Seen.
- In some family ( where hereditary of post- maturity deliveries are
common ) have more chances to give a birth to post- term baby.
- When a mother already had previous post-term pregnancies, Likely to
have more chance
- It can sometimes occur due to miscalculation of expected date of
delivery ( EDD )
- When a mother is in elderly primigravida condition have more prone
to give birth to a post mature baby.
 CLINICAL FEATURES

THESE ARE :

- Nails Of Baby Are Overgrown

- Lack Of Fat On Body Is Very Minimal
- Creases Are Visible On Palms And Soles Of Feet
- Colour Of Baby’s Skin Is About Yellow Green Due To Staining
From Meconium
- Skin may be dry-wrinkled
 DIAGNOSIS
• By Physiological Examination Of Baby

By Calculating The Pregnancy Duration

 During Pregnancy
 Such As Girth Of Abdomen, History Of False Pain,
Obstetric Palpation, Weight Loss Etc.
 MANAGEMENT OF POST MATURITY
• IN THE POST MATURITY PREGNANCY FOLLOWING STEPS SHOULD FOLLLOW –

 Regular Testing For Fetal Well Being And To Detect Any Abnormalities
 Ultrasound, amniotic fluid volume and examination
 Continuous electronic monitoring of fetal heart rate
 Delivery of baby by cesarean section if needed, like in abnormal
position of baby
 Care of baby with hypoglycemia, any respiratory problems
 Care of baby with birth asphyxia, intracranial damage and baby with
low Apgar score.
 PREVENTION OF POST MATURITY

 Accurate Calculation Of Edd

 Monitoring Of Fetus For Well Being By Ultrasound In
Pregnancy Is Necessary To Detect Abnormalities And Date
Of Delivery
Provision Of Good, Peaceful Environment To Mother
 Provision Of Good Nutrients Supply To Mother For
Preventing The Risk Of Life Threatening Condition To
Baby.
