IC FREE RUNNING

OSCILLATOR CLOCK
Presentor: Samjhana Chaudhary
IC free running oscillator clock is a clock constructed with two inverters, a capacitor,
and a resistor. The output voltage oscillates between high and low. The frequency of
oscillation is determined by the values of the capacitor C and the resistor R,

Fig : IC free running oscillator clock.

Suppose that initially Va = 0 V, Vb = 5v and Vd = 0 V. As a consequence, the capacitor
C will begin to charge (via R) as shown in figure below.

This charging will continue until the voltage at point a has risen sufficiently to cause
the output of that inverter to change to low, that is, 0 V.
Now Vb = 0 V and Vd = 5 V . The capacitor will now discharge until the voltage at
point a has dropped enough to cause the output of the first inverter to change back
to high, that is, Vb = 5 V and consequently Vd = 0 V.

The cycle begins and the cycle of the clock can be adjusted.
