Dr. T P Krishna Murthy
Background

 Plastics; Polymers;
 Current Problem of using plastics;
 Replacement of plastics;
 Bio-degradability?
 Natural polymers;
 Edible polymers: Polymeric materials which can be consumed by human beings, animals or
microorganisms without any noxious effects towards health.
Objectives:

 Identification of unconventional (tubers) starch source and Isolation of starch from the source.

 Preparation of Bio-plastic and Optimizing the process parameters.

 Evaluation of physicochemical properties of bio-plastic.

 Molding and Applications of Bio-plastic.

 Enhancing anti-microbial property of Bio-plastic.

Preparation of the edible film/coating:

• For generating edible films and coatings, all the primary materials such as film-forming polymers,
plasticizers, and other additives should be from food grade sources and safe to eat components.

• All the process equipment and conditions including salt concentration, pH, temperature, enzymatic
reaction, and solvent types should be acceptable for food processing.

• The main techniques used to produce edible films including extrusion, injection molding,
thermoforming andhesolvent
