Integration of Pulverized
Water Hyacinth into the
Mixture of Concrete Bricks
Introduction
As the world progresses toward modernity, the need for infrastructures has increased in
past decades to meet the demands of a world experiencing continued population growth and
social and economic development. Bricks, concrete, metals, aluminum, and wood are among
the many types of construction materials in rising demand in the city, province, or even in
residential areas. With that, the engineering community is responsible for producing cost-
effective and durable construction materials that can guarantee safe and long-lasting
infrastructures.
Background of the Study
One of the most widely and extensively used materials in construction, according to
Desai (2020), is concrete due to its properties such as durability, strength, structural stability,
fire resistance, insulation, and sound absorption. As time passes by, with the help of several
industries mentioned by Jayaraman, Pradeepa, Soni, and Rakshit (2016) in the concrete
industry, admixtures to concrete that improves concretes’ quality, especially the emergence of
researches that uses abundant organic products, were studied to reduce cost in admixtures
and reduce pollution, according to Abana, Vega, Gacias, Rañon, Talattad, Orata, and Perez
(2021).
Background of the Study
In such circumstances, the researchers come up with an admixture component to use in the
production of concrete bricks. The excessive emergence of water hyacinth, which is a common
problem of Muntinlupa City, especially in places near Laguna de Bay, was able to be pulverized and
may be used in concrete mixture as an additive. Water hyacinth is a floating plant that uses its dark
roots to collect nutrients from the water. According to DENR-ERDB Science Research Expert Jamella
de Castro, water hyacinths are a serious environmental issue since they affect native aquatic
biodiversity, ecosystems, and composition of Laguna de Bay and other lakes. In a statement issued on
June 14, 2021, DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda stated that the department wants to address
the water hyacinth problem plaguing Laguna de Bay. The study will not only aid in improving the
concrete bricks' durability, but it will also help to solve the problem of an excessive water hyacinth
population in the area, which has a caustic effect on the marine environment.
Statement of the Problem
Water hyacinths are a serious environmental threat since their escalating
population has been affecting the aquatic ecosystems. This had been causing
various problems including fish mortality, destruction of pen and cage structures;
it also blocks waterways and incapacitates flood control and wildlife use.
Assessing previous studies regarding the chemical substances that the water
hyacinths contain, it can be used as an admixture to concrete bricks, enhancing the
strength and durability of what the standard concrete bricks could execute.
Objectives
 To describe what components of water hyacinth are
feasible as an admixture to concrete bricks.
 To develop the strength and durability of concrete bricks.
 To explain which factors affect the strength and durability
of concrete bricks.
