END

MARKS
• We must end sentences English with a punctuation mark.
• There are three types of end punctuation/marks: periods, questions
marks and exclamation marks.

Periods
• Periods end complete sentences. Periods are the most common type
ending punctuation. Periods are used to end many types of sentences .

Examples:
• The sun is shining this morning
• Look under your chair.
• The teacher asked Michael why he was late.
• Dad is working today.
• Periods can also be used to end indirect questions. Direct questions
ask questions, while indirect questions report questions.

Examples:
• Irish asked if she could borrow my book. (indirect question)
• Can I borrow your book? (direct question)

• I wonder who will win the game. (indirect question)


• Who will win the game? (direct question)
Question Marks
• We used question marks to end sentences that ask direct question.
Question marks indicate that a sentence is a question.

Examples:
• Does your mom like gardening?
• What did they eat for dinner last night?
• Do have to go to the school tomorrow?
• Where is Samantha?
Exclamation Marks
• Exclamation marks indicate surprise or strong emotion. We use
exclamation marks to show how strong feelings, such as joy, surprise,
shock and anger. Try to avoid using exclamation marks in formal
writing.

Examples:
• Be careful!
• Your new phone is amazing!
• Stop texting me!
• Congratrulations!
